June 2009 Entries
With July 4 on the horizon, many of us are packing it up and getting out of town. I've got my sights set on Saugatuck, Mich., by far my favorite place to get out on the water in the Midwest. Thanks to some wonderful family friends, I have had the opportunity to spend many a summer day in the Saugatuck/Douglas area and countless hours on Lake Michigan and the Kalamazoo River. This 'tag-a-long' has loved every minute of it!
What makes Saugatuck such a hot spot? Well, it's conveniently located 2.5 hours from Chicago and Detroit (by car) on the Kalamazoo River (which...

With Father's Day on the horizon, I thought it was the perfect time to share this short film, titled Good Run, created by Discover Boating with GM. We like to call it 'a celebration of memories made taking life's journey by boat.' But, you be the judge.
WARNING: It's really touching. Your eyes may get a little watery.
Admittedly, I tear up watching this video EVERY single time I view it (this morning was no exception) ... and, I've watched it many times. Maybe it's because I can easily look back and smile at the thought of fishing and canoeing trips with my dad (including the...

National Fishing & Boating Week runs through Sunday. It's an annual celebration of fishing and boating with local community events held throughout the U.S. Keep an eye out for free fishing days, derbies, regattas, educational events, boating demonstrations and festivals in your area.
Millions are passionate about fishing in this country ... how do you explain its al-'lure'? (My lame attempt at topical humor).
Here's a great story from an avid angler and colleague, Larry, in our Miami office, who says fishing and boating have been a cornerstone of his Florida upbringing ever since he was a kid and shares his favorite memories with us:
The charm of...

Happy Monday!
Today kicks off Great Outdoors Month, created to 'highlight the benefits of active fun outdoors and our magnificent shared resources of forests, parks, refuges, and other public lands and waters.' I plan to make a special effort to appreciate and enjoy the outdoors as much as possible this month ... so long as the weather cooperates.
What are your outdoor plans for June?
Boaters were out taking advantage of the nice weather this weekend in spots all across the country. Here's the Chicago skyline by boat (blue skies really help with my picture quality) -- we had a great weekend here, with...
