The pros and cons of living aboard

What are the pros and cons of living aboard my boat?
Of course you’ve thought about living aboard your boat. Who hasn’t? Where do you feel most relaxed? Where do your kids forget to check their cell phone every five minutes? Where else do small, simple meals taste so wonderful? Right…it’s out on your boat.
There are, however, some things to consider:
1) The right vessel. You'll want a boat with enough room and comforts to make your decision to abandon land-living worth it. Smaller is cheaper, but once you’ve lived aboard a month or two, you may find it’s not much of a value. Sure, you’ve got a great view for your morning coffee, but if your living quarters are too tight, or the restroom facilities have your wife unnerved, you may not have given it the proper consideration. It’s a big lifestyle change to live on a boat. Spend the time to evaluate all your options. And don’t forget the most important thing. Talk to folks at your marina or club that already live aboard. Not only do they know the pitfalls and rewards, but they are always willing to share their story.
2) Understand the true costs. Living aboard can be an amazing lifestyle for the right folks. It can be much less expensive to live on your boat compared to a house, so it’s an attractive option for certain demographics like retirees, constant business travelers or folks who can “work anywhere.” But make sure you conservatively estimate your maintenance, applicable taxes, marina fees, eating out more often, insurance, depreciation, and other costs. Taking an honest assessment of your live aboard situation can mean the difference between a committed, enjoyable life on your boat and a short-lived fantasy.
3) Be willing to scale down. This is a big one for some people. Let’s say you’ve lived, worked and raised a family in a traditional single-family house for 30 or 40 years. You can accumulate a lot of “stuff” over that time. Unless you want to take on the burden of putting many of your worldly possessions in storage, you’re going to have to face the truth that you need to downsize significantly. Work with the 10-percent rule here: If your house is 3,000 square feet, plan on scaling down to 300 feet on your boat. It’s tough, but it can be done. Just be realistic while you’re planning.
Living aboard can be one an incredibly rewarding lifestyle. You will not find better neighbors, you will not have a better night’s sleep anywhere, and if you get tired of the view, you can always hoist your anchor and move along to the next port. Remember it’s a lifestyle that requires some thought and planning to make it work. But when it works, you’ll wonder how all those land-lubbers live on dirt.

Gravatar Well ... after living aboard my Chris-Craft Cherokee 32 ( Sailboat ), I certainly wouldn't shy away from living on the Yacht pictured. As my boat has only a 9' beam, the toughest thing is trying to pass another person in the salon. Also, you'd better be really, REALLY good friends if you're in a relationship. There is no such thing as privacy !! Ever.... Also, you'd best be able to talk things out or one of you is going to spend a lot of time on deck while the other is below ... no where to go. Other than that, it is a wonderful lifestyle that takes some getting used to... just kick back and learn what's important and whay isn't. You've chosen to live aboard to experience the Ocean's wonders .... so let yourself !!

Gravatar I'll second Larry's comment. My wife and I have lived aboard our 1968 33' Soverel for almost 3 years now, and we wouldn't ever go back to living on land.

Privacy will mostly go away, but there are ways around that. "Personal space" works for us. We each have a small space that is ours and ours alone; likewise for storage. But it's almost entirely a shared space.

The best way to describe the adjustment I have come up with is this: Living on a boat is like living in one of those handheld puzzles with the sliding letters. Once you hit the point where you have everything you need and want on board, you have to get used to moving it around in order to get at some of the things. And you can never fill that one blank spot permanently; once you're settled in, you cannot add something to the boat without getting rid of something else.

The upside is, you live on a boat! Less stress, lower cost of living, weird and interesting neighbors, and a much smaller energy footprint.

Gravatar I lived on a 26 ft Columbia 26 MKII for around 3 years and moved up to a bigger (35ft ) Dickerson custom built ocean racing ketch. Lived on the old Dick for around 10 years and was forced to move on dirt because some itiot invented the computer and took my job away but that's another story.I loved living on a boat...the sound of baby drum making the noises they make and the gentle rocking and occasional wake makers(the sign said nothing about being awake)and the wonderful people you meet on the water...nothing like it...really miss it.

Gravatar we just finished 11 months of living on our 45 ft. sailboat, my husband, grand daughter(whom we are raising) are now trying to adjust to an apartment for the Winter months. We were not prepared for a Winter in Maryland however we did it! It was the best bonding/learning experience plus we got very familiar with our new boat. Heat and cooking were our biggest challenges along with tide changes. Our grand daughter was in private school and ended up missing 30 days of school due to extreme high and low tides. We are doing the apt. thing so that we can update the boat since it is 29 yrs old and our grand daughter won't miss as much school. We are planning to head south in 2 yrs and after this past year we can't imagine not living on a boat

Gravatar I have lived and worked on the water for more than 30 years. Im not comfortable ashore any longer as the land moves when I am there, not a very comfortable feeling. My wife, our 2 dogs and myself live at anchor for a few reasons; about 9 years ago a neighbor at the marina we were moored at ran his engine one summer eve through the night setting our carbon monoxide detector off 2x through the night. The second time I pulled the batteries out after the second time, another reason is 10 local marina fires in 9 years destroying on average 5 boats per fire. We prefer to rely on our own vigilance rather than having to rely on our neighbors vigilance/common sense. It is becoming harder to liveaboard whether at anchor or at a marina due to regulations. Most marinas people have to sneekaboard to live there. Im proud to be a boat person and not ashamed to fight for my right to liveaboard. It sure would be nice if the sneekaboards would come out of the closet to give us a voice in the over-regulating which is being forced upon us.
